General information about Organic production and its certification

This website makes references at various places to Spanish Food products designated as "Ecological", Organic or "Bio" (notwithstanding other references of a similar nature), and this section seeks to inform users of this website what exactly is meant by these references under the appropriate International laws which govern the production of, and trade in, these products.

While the term 'Organic food' was initially determined by standards of Organic farmers associations, today the standards for products from Organic agriculture are increasingly defined by laws and legal regulations. Statutory provisions applicable internationally, and more specifically within the European Union, protect against misuse of terms such as 'eco' or 'organic' or indeed 'bio' as a label for organic products.

For this reason trading of Organic products is more transparent for consumers. Among the the most urgent legislated demands for Organic production of agricultural products are:
a sustainable and environmentally sound cultivation (i.e. deliberate non-use of mineral-bound nitrogenous fertilizer, pesticides and antibiotics for prevention porposes in animal husbandry), the production of healthy food (i.e. deliberate non-use of certain food additives and processing aids).
With laws regulating the requirements for Organic production also comes supervision and control by independent controlling agencies to ensure that producers, processors, importers and exporters of Organic products are in compliance with rules and regulations. Thereby, a misuse of the terms "eco" or "organic" or "bio" for Organic products can be avoided and quality guaranteed.

To furthermore ensure that controlling agencies indeed perform their control in an independent and compentent way, they are required to meet the requirements of various accreditation and/or registration programs (i.e. ISO Guide 65 or DIN EN 45011, registration programs of USDA or the japanese MAFF). On the level of associations the IFOAM-accreditation (carried out by the IOAS) is also gaining in importance.
